The design and prototype were presented to Volkswagen director Heinrich Nordhoff on November 16, 1953 and the model was appreciated by the Volkswagen management. In 1954, Volkswagen guaranteed that sufficient chassis could be supplied. The Karmann Ghia was presented at car fairs in early 1955. The public reacted enthusiastically to the model, and in August 1955 the first Karmann Ghia was built in Osnabrück. The chassis of the export version of the Beetle served as the basis. The model was designated Type 14; Volkswagen's internal type designation was Type 143. In the first year, more than 10 thousand units were sold; much more than Volkswagen had expected.

The first Karmann Ghias were powered by the 30 hp air-cooled boxer engine that was also in the Beetle. This engine was not strong enough for a real sports car, but the appearance of the Karmann Ghia and the reliability of the Beetle made up for a lot. The body and nose of the elegant two-door coupe was hand-built in one piece, and the car was much more expensive to make than the assembly line Beetle. Nevertheless, the Karmann sold excellently, and from November 1, 1957 a convertible version was built. In 1959 the model was slightly changed. The main differences at the front were the "nostrils" that were widened and the headlamps that were placed higher in the round sockets. At the rear, the lights conformed more to the curve of the body.

Karmann was doing so well that in 1960 a factory was opened in the Brazilian city of São Bernardo do Campo. From December 31, 1960, the Type 14 was also built here, initially only the coupé version, but from 1968 also the convertible.

The beautiful shape and lines of the car are accentuated by the red paint with chrome moldings and mirror caps. The interior was upgraded with better seats with integrated headrests and leatherette upholstery. The red paint is a nice combination with the black bumpers with rosettes and the black cloth convertible roof.

This Karmann convertible has been in the collection of a Volkswagen enthusiast for quite some time. That is why we recommend that you give the car technical attention and maintenance in advance if you plan to drive a lot of kilometers with this convertible. A new battery was recently installed. There are also cosmetic points of attention, as can be seen in the detailed photos. The dashboard has a drought crack due to exposure to sunlight. If you would like to take the red paintwork to a higher level, then complete refinishing is a great option.

The body has neat fits of the sills, fenders, doors, hood and trunk lid.
