The MGA was built from September 1955 to September 1962.

In that period, 101,081 copies were built. In 1952, however, a prototype (EX175, registration number HM06) with TD mechanics was shown to the then head of BMC, Leonard Lord. This prototype was largely based on UMG400, a TD special raced by George Philips in the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans. Lord, however, rejected further developments, because he had chosen shortly before to let the Austin-Healey 100 go into production. This decision has also led to the modernization of the TD, the development of the TF.

But in the end the time had come, three MGAs (aluminium prototypes, EX182) drove at Le Mans in 1955 and the first productions of MGAs appeared a little later in that year. With its low profile and streamlined body, the MGA was very different from its predecessors with their traditional square radiators, separate fenders and headlights and square fuel tank with spare wheel on the back. The MGA, as it appeared in 1955, was a two-seat roadster with a 1489 engine. cc (XPEG series) coupled to a four-speed gearbox. With 72 HP at 5500 rpm, the top speed was just under 160 km/h. Drum brakes were mounted all around, while the car was delivered as standard on steel disc wheels.
