1934 RILEY Special

* Door de blauwe RAC kleur komt het design van deze prachtige Riley goed tot zijn recht. Hij doet ons denken aan de vintage race Bugatti's welke heden ten dagen vaak museumstukken zijn geworden.

De legende Freddie Dixon begon op 38-jarige leeftijd met racen met auto's, na een lange en succesvolle carrière op de motor. Hij begon met een getunede Riley Brooklands, maar stapte al snel over op 6-cilinder auto's die hij zelf had gebouwd. Hij had veel successen welke hem groot hebben gemaakt. Dixons meest opmerkelijke rallysuccessen waren: Het winnen van de Brooklands 500-mijlsrace in 1934 & 36; 2e worden op 3 afzonderlijke evenementen in 1935; en vele hoge plaatsen behaald bij de races op de Isle of Man.
Hij was zo succesvol dat hij het officiële Riley Works-teams leidde. Zelfs in 1933 toen Riley 6-cilinder auto's tegen de door Freddie Dixon zelf ontwikkelde 4-cilinder Brooklands liet rijden! Hij was dus zijn eigen concurent!

Met veel vakmanschap en oog voor ieder detail is deze aluminium Riley Special gemaakt. Details van dit vakmanschap zijn terug te vinden in onder andere de 211 handgemaakte louvres, welke de motorwarmte sneller afvoeren. Het arbeidsintensieve mechanisme welke alle 6 carburateurs tegelijk in actie laat komen en met elkaar verbind, is indrukwekkend om te zien. Helemaal wanneer je beseft dat dit dagen werk is geweest om dit met uiterste precisie te maken. Daarnaast zorgen klinknagels voor een stevige verbinding van de aluminium plaatwerkdelen. Het voorste en achterste gedeelte van de carrosserie is verbonden door twee strippen. Deze zijn door middel van boutjes aan elkaar bevestigd en voorzien van borgdraad tegen het lostrillen. Deze techniek werd vroeger veel toegepast op racewagens en is naast functioneel ook gewoon mooi om naar te kijken. Heel bijzonder zijn de speciaal voor deze auto gemaakte kuipstoelen. De basis van de kuipstoelen is met de hand gemaakt uit aluminium. Het zitvlak is bekleed met stevig kwaliteits leer. Bij de rugleuning is dit leer door middel van lederen veters opgespannen in het aluminium framewerk. Tijdens sportieve bochten zit je stevig in de verstelbare kuipstoelen. Door een vernuftig mechaniek zijn de frames van de kuipstoelen naar voren omklapbaar, zodat de afsluitbare ruime bagageruimte goed bereikbaar is.
Zeer fraai zijn de lederen armsteunen, met een gekartelde zoom en een lederen veter. Het aluminium dashboard is voorzien van 5 'Jaeger' tellerinstrumenten, te noemen; toerenteller, mijlenteller, watertemperatuurmeter, brandstofmeter en oliedruk, welke overigens een zeer goede oliedruk aangeeft.
Deze oorspronkelijk uit Nieuw Zeeland afkomstige Riley was een zeer goede basis om de 'special' op te bouwen, dit mede doordat motor, versnellingsbak en het chassis bij elkaar horen. De auto is dus matching numbers!
De motor werd herbouwd met nieuwe drijfstangen en is voorzien van een 1,2,3 ontsteking. De 'Pre-select' versnellingsbak hoort bij het motorblok en chassis. Kosten noch moeite zijn gespaard; nieuwe remvoeringen, aluminium radiateur en waterpomp zijn gemonteerd. Ook heeft de Riley een lang cardan om bij lage toerentallen rustig te kunnen rijden, en een speciaal spruitstuk dat werd gefabriceerd om plaats te bieden aan zes Amal-carburateurs.

De afgelopen jaren was deze bijzodere Riley te bewonderen op het 'Concour D'Elegance' en 'Vintage Revival te Zandvoort'. Met een eersteklas uiterlijk, met veel aandacht voor detail. Hij is uitgerust met zeldzame Riley koplampen (met embleem) en richtingaanwijzers. De 19" spaakwielen zijn voorzien van Blockley banden. Net boven de banden zijn de handgemaakte spatborden gemonteerd. Een geweldig uitzicht tijdens het rijden.
Deze pre-war komt goed tot stilstand met de gekoelde remtrommels. De aansturing van de remmen gebeurt met zeer solide remkabels. De fraaie handrem met dito mechaniek is buiten de carrosserie geplaatst zodat de bestuurder zoveel mogelijk bewegingsvrijheid heeft. De afgeronde opklapbare ruiten beschermen de bestuurder en zijn passagier.
Door de verstelbare demping zowel voor als achter, is het rijgedrag al naar gelang de omgeving af te stemmen.
Onder de motorkap is veel zorg besteed aan de afwerking, op het aluminium schutbord met Riley-logo zijn 6 reserve bougies geplaatst. Er is gebruik gemaakt van koperen leidingen, en de radiateur is gemaakt van aluminium voor betere koeling.
Naast een massaschakelaar heeft de Riley een elektrisch systeem met moderne relais, welke buiten het zichtveld zitten, maar goed bereikbaar zijn.

Qua design was het de bedoeling een sportieve body te ontwerpen voor twee inzittenden, en ruimte voor bagage. De compleet aluminium body herbergt dan ook flink wat ruimte achter de stoelen voor de eventuele bagage. Het plaatwerk heeft een tijdloze vormgeving. Bekijk eens goed hoe mooi de rondingen van het plaatwerk lopen en samenkomen in de boattail met bovenop een race tankdop. En natuurlijk wordt alles nog eens prachtig geaccentueerd door de perfect bij de auto passende (RAC) blauwe racekleur met contrasterende aluminium treeplanken.

En dan het rijden… werkelijk fantastisch! En, precies wat er te verwachten valt van een tot in elk detail perfect geprepareerde pre-war. In dit geval niet te zwaar sturend en precies aanvoelend. De lange wielbasis en de grote 19" banden zorgen daarentegen weer voor een heerlijk comfort. De 1.5 liter 6 cilinder motor met dubbele bovenliggende nokkenassen en een licht schakelende 'Pre-select' versnellingsbak geven een intens contact met het mechaniek. Het zalige geluid uit de dubbele rvs-uitlaat klinkt als muziek in de oren. Dit is exact waar het om gaat bij het rijden in een vooroorlogse race/rally auto.

* Due to the Satain blue RAC color, the design of this beautiful Riley comes into its own. It reminds us of the vintage race Bugatti's, which nowadays have often become museum pieces.

Legend Freddie Dixon started racing cars at the age of 38, after a long and successful career on the motorcycle. He started with a tuned Riley Brooklands, but soon switched to 6-cylinder cars that he built himself. He had many successes, earning him his status as a legend. Dixon's most notable rally successes were: Winning the Brooklands 500 Mile Race in 1934 & 36; Placed 2nd in 3 separate events in 1935; and many high places achieved in the races on the Isle of Man.
He was so successful that he led the official Riley Works teams. Even in 1933 when Riley ran 6-cylinder cars against the 4-cylinder Brooklands developed by Freddie Dixon himself! So he was his own competitor!

This aluminum Riley Special is made with great craftsmanship and an eye for every detail. Details of this craftsmanship can be found in, among other things, the 211 handmade louvres, which dissipate the engine heat faster. The labour-intensive mechanism that activates and connects all 6 carburettors at the same time is impressive to see. Especially when you realize that it has taken days to make this with extreme precision. In addition, rivets ensure a firm connection of the aluminum sheet metal parts. The front and rear parts of the body are connected by two strips. These are fastened to each other by means of bolts and provided with locking wire against vibrating. In the past, this technique was often used on racing cars and, in addition to being functional, it is also simply beautiful to look at. The bucket seats made especially for this car are very special. The base of the bucket seats is made by hand from aluminum. The seat is covered with sturdy quality leather. At the back, this leather is tensioned in the aluminum frame by means of leather laces. During sporty cornering, you sit firmly in the adjustable bucket seats. Thanks to an ingenious mechanism, the frames of the bucket seats can be folded forwards, so that the lockable spacious luggage compartment is easily accessible.
The leather armrests are very nice, with a serrated hem and a leather lace. The aluminum dashboard is equipped with 5 'Jeager' instruments, specifically; tachometer, odometer, water temperature gauge, fuel gauge and oil pressure, which accurately indicates the healthy oil pressure.
This car, originally from New Zealand, was a very good basis for building the 'special', partly because the engine, gearbox and chassis belong together.
The engine was rebuilt with new connecting rods and features a 1,2,3 ignition. The 'Pre-select' gearbox belongs to the engine block and chassis. Costs nor effort has been spared; new brake linings, aluminum radiator and water pump have been fitted. The Riley also has a long cardan shaft to be able to drive quietly at low speeds, and a special manifold fabricated to accommodate six Amal carburettors.

Since its completion, the car has been used to attend the 'Concour D'Elegance' and 'Vintage Revival te Zandvoort', with minimal mileage on the road. With a first-class appearance, and great attention to detail. It is equipped with rare Riley headlights (with emblem) and turn signals. The 19" spoked wheels are fitted with Blockley tires. The handmade mudguards are mounted just above the tires. A great view while driving.
To allow this pre-war to come to a good stop, the car is equipped with cooled brake drums. The brakes are controlled with very solid brake cables. The beautiful handbrake with ditto mechanism is placed outside the body. So that the driver has as much freedom of movement as possible. The nicely rounded folding windows protect the driver and passenger.
Due to the adjustable damping both front and rear, the driving behavior can be adjusted according to the environment.
Great care has been taken in the finish under the hood, 6 spare spark plugs have been placed on the aluminum bulkhead with Riley logo. Copper pipes are used. And the radiator is made of aluminum.
In addition to a mass switch, the Riley has an electrical system with modern relays, which are out of sight, but are easily accessible.

In terms of design, the intention was to design a sporty body for two occupants, and space for luggage. The complete aluminum body offers a lot of space behind the seats for any luggage. The sheet metal has a timeless design. Take a good look at how beautifully the curves of the sheet metal run and come together in the boattail with a racing fuel cap on top. And, of course, everything is beautifully accentuated by the perfectly matched (RAC) blue racing color with contrasting aluminum running boards.

And then the driving… truly fantastic! And exactly what one might expect from a pre-war perfectly prepared in every detail. In this case, not steering too heavily and extremely sensitive. The long wheelbase and the large 19-inch tires, on the other hand, provide wonderful comfort. The 1.5 liter 6 cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and a light-shifting 'Pre-select' gearbox give an intense contact with the mechanics. The blissful sound from the double stainless steel exhaust is music to your ears. This is exactly what driving a pre-war is all about.

This Riley has everything the demanding owner has on his list: impressiveness, perfection in every detail, exclusivity and comfort mixed with sportiness.
