HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
This iconic ‘hot hatch’ was delivered new on 20 June 1983 in Udine, Italy. The car has been very tastefully specified and has been very well preserved in its original condition, meaning it is in top condition. The car comes with a relatively generous standard specification. A special feature is that the original delivery document is still with the car! At the time, the car was sold for 12,355,000 Italian lire. The original registration number was retained until 2026, when the car was transported by us to the Netherlands. The car also comes with documentation from a classic car club and a wheel alignment report from 2026. In 2024, the Renault underwent a service in Buja, which is situated in the Udine region – the very same area where the car was originally delivered new.

EXTERIOR
The jet-black paintwork has a beautiful sheen and looks almost as good as new. This contrasts particularly well with the red interior. The low mileage has resulted in a car in excellent condition, with beautiful paintwork and virtually flawless rubber and plastic body parts. The lights are also in very good condition. The 13-inch Alpine alloy wheels are in very good condition. They are fitted with Yokohama tyres that are still in good condition. As you look at the car, you notice more and more distinctive and attractive details. Think of the sporty grilles next to the rear window, the handle-less doors, the hinged rear windows, the distinctive fuel cap, the air intake on the bonnet and the side indicators set within Renault’s window-shaped logo. The bodywork is very rigid and original, with beautifully aligned panel gaps. The Renault 5 options featured on this car include front fog lights, high-gloss black paintwork and side striping.

INTERIOR
For a 1980s hatchback, the interior is very well equipped, featuring, amongst other things, integrated headrests, a rev counter, a turbo pressure gauge, alloy wheels, a rear windscreen wiper and a heated rear windscreen. The windows are tinted. In addition, this example is fitted with a radio-cassette player and a sports steering wheel. The front seats feature lateral support and headrests. The interior is in very good condition with only minimal signs of wear. Even the floor mats are still in good condition. The side panels and dashboard are also in good condition, with no damage or signs of ageing. The boot is also very tidy.

TECHNICAL
The use of turbo technology in a small car was ahead of its time in the 1980s. It is fitted with a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a turbocharger, delivering 111 pk. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and drives the front wheels. Thanks to its low kerb weight of around 850 kilograms, the car combines a favourable power-to-weight ratio with lively performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 9 seconds and reaches a top speed of approximately 185 km/h. The car features independent suspension and disc brakes, giving it direct and sporty handling. A characteristic feature is the turbo’s behaviour: at low revs, power is limited, but as soon as the turbo builds up pressure, the engine suddenly delivers extra power. This results in a typical, lively driving experience with a clearly noticeable turbo lag. The engine bay looks neat and dry. The car comes with a service report dated 2024. The car drives well.

GENERAL
The 1983 Renault 5 Alpine Turbo is a compact hot hatch that stood out in the early 1980s thanks to its combination of low weight, front-wheel drive and turbo technology, featuring a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine delivering around 110 pk and thus offering very nimble performance for its time; the car reaches around 185 km/h and is known for its spirited character as soon as the turbo builds up pressure, providing a distinctly noticeable ‘turbo kick’ and thus a genuine race-like driving experience in a small city car. Interestingly, this model is one of the first affordable European cars to truly bring turbo technology to the compact segment, which is why it is often regarded as a pioneer of the later hot hatch culture. Its predecessor is the naturally aspirated Renault 5 Alpine, which has less power but already introduces the sporty character of the Renault 5, whilst its successor is the Renault Supercinq GT Turbo, which further develops the concept with a more modern chassis, better handling and even sharper performance. Today, the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo is regarded as an iconic 1980s hot hatch and a key milestone in the evolution of small sports cars. A new Renault 5 has even recently gone into production, with clear influences from the classic design!
