HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
“MG A, A Class Of Its Own.” The MG A is a quintessential example of the British sports car: affordable, lightweight and a joy to drive. It is, therefore, one of the best-selling British sports cars of its era. This particular example began its life in 1959 as a 1500 in the favourable climate of the United States and is left-hand drive. In 2002, the car was shipped from the state of Washington to the Netherlands, where it was subsequently extensively restored. This included a completely new paint job on the bodywork (2002, worth €3,000) and an engine overhaul in 2005 (worth €3,222). Invoices for these works are available, as are valuation reports and many other invoices. During the restoration, the MGA was fully converted to the 1600 specification, featuring the more powerful 1600 engine fitted with twin SU carburettors. It also features improved and safer rear lighting, badges, etc. In the most recent valuation in 2020, the MG was valued at €29,500. In 2005, the MG was fitted with an improved 5-speed gearbox. This ensures lower revs, lower fuel consumption and a more comfortable ride. The best of both worlds, in other words: ideally suited for longer (touring) trips and holidays!
The MG has been owned by a single family from 2002 to 2026 and is now being offered by us to the next enthusiast.

EXTERIOR
A stunning colour combination that we don’t often see on an MG A: a deep black paintwork with a red imitation leather interior. Visually, the MG is enhanced by chrome spoke wheels and a practical luggage rack. Lucas spotlights are fitted at the front. The MG is fitted with a soft top and features removable side windows, side wind deflectors and a spare wheel. The car was professionally repainted in 2002, but moderate signs of wear have developed over time. The bodywork is otherwise in a pristine and original condition. The chrome trim and rubber seals are in reasonable condition. In 2002, the front and rear lights were replaced and are still in good condition. The black canvas soft top shows moderate signs of wear. A black imitation leather tonneau cover is also included. An exterior mirror is fitted to the windscreen and there is a badge bar in front of the grille. In February 2026, the car was professionally polished, restoring the paintwork to a brilliant shine.

INTERIOR
The imitation leather interior was, of course, restored in 2002 and is therefore still in good condition. The upholstery is free from tears or significant damage. The interior is relatively well-equipped with a centre armrest, heating and a radio (Ten Auto with external antenna and dashboard-mounted speaker). The boot accommodates the spare wheel, a jack and tools.

TECHNICAL
During the restoration in the Netherlands, the car was fitted with a reconditioned 1600 (1588 cc) engine. This engine is fitted with twin SU carburettors with separate stainless steel K&N air filters, which, as far as can be seen, are in good and original condition. The gearbox and drivetrain have also been modified and refurbished. The wire-spoke wheels are fitted with Vredestein Classic Sprint tyres with sufficient tread. The car drives and changes gear well. This beautiful MGA has seen little use in recent years, so a service for the new season and the replacement of the rear brake cylinders are recommended to ensure many more kilometres of driving pleasure!

GENERAL
The MG A is one of MG’s first new post-war sports cars. In 1955, the MG A was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a replacement for the pre-war MG TF Midget. It is a completely different and more modern model than its predecessors.
The design of the MGA dates back to 1951 when MG designer Syd Enever created a streamlined body for George Philips’ MG TD to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The problem with the TD was the driver’s high seating position. Indeed, the narrow chassis of the TF did not allow for a lower seating position. A new chassis was designed in which the floor was attached to the underside of the frame, enabling a more aerodynamic design. The idea was initially rejected by Leonard Lord, CEO of BMC, who had struck a deal to build the new Austin-Healeys. When sales of traditional MG models declined sharply, it was decided to produce the MG A.
The name was chosen because this car was intended to introduce a new line of sports cars.
