A Mercedes designer is not easily distracted by fashion, but that was once different in the late 1950s. The Mercedes that listened to the code W111 (designed by Karl Wilfert) made its appearance and winked at the eccentric Americans of the time. Although it had considerably smaller fins than his American contemporaries, it still nicely owes its nickname, Heckflosse. By the way, Mercedes wouldn't be Mercedes if they didn't mention that the fins weren't so much for decoration as they had a logical function: as a corner marker, oh so handy when reversing into parking. Anyway: with the unveiling of the model in 1959. Under the motto: “The new six-cylinder – a class of its own”, the first S-class was in fact born, because the model was instantly the top model of the German company. It was certainly modern, because the new Mercedes was equipped with a real safety body with crumple zones and also a chassis that could absorb a frontal blow because it was given a crumple zone at the front and rear. The theme of 'safety' was also carried through in the interior where you could sit on a safety steering wheel - the column of which you could not pierce like a spear.

A range of versions was available, of which the 95 hp 220b was the entry-level. Our Mercedes is the 220Sb with (110 hp) Succeeded by the 220 SEb (120 hp). From 1965 there was the 230S (120 hp) and a little later the 250SE with 150 hp. For those who were still not satisfied, Mercedes launched the W112 in 1961. This car was the same as the W111, but came as a '300SE' with 160 hp six-cylinder, air suspension, lots of chrome and a considerably more luxurious version. Until the arrival of the 600 series, it was the most luxurious car that Mercedes delivered.

Our 220 Sb (W111) was delivered new in Germany. In 2010 the car got a Dutch registration. The car has only driven 3,500 kilometers in the last 7 years. This "Heckflosse" is in an original and beautiful condition. Much attention has been paid to technique, finish and details. The interior is in a very good condition as well as the gray fabric seats. The whole is in good used condition. The headliner is tight and undamaged. In addition, the carpet was renewed in 2019.

Also in terms of bodywork, the car is in a very good, unrestored condition. It has not been tampered with or welded, it has perfect fitting seams and the underside is also in very good condition. Our Mercedes-Benz was completely repainted in the past with a 2-component paint in the color 'Graphitgrau (color number 190) and is in perfect condition. The chrome work looks very nice and intact, the front bumper, grille and headlight trim rings have been renewed. The body has great fits of the doors, hood, trunk lid, sills and fenders. In addition, the bottom is in very good condition. The well-maintained engine compartment is also a feast for the eyes. The 2,195 cc 6-cylinder in-line engine has one carburettor and runs nicely. The car is equipped with a manual gearbox which shifts well.

This Mercedes comes with a binder with, among other things, invoices from Jaap Havik Mercedes Benz Restoration.
