Mendyka Spider Carriage
Manufaktura Mendyka is a Polish carriage manufacturer specialising in the design, construction and restoration of high-quality horse-drawn carriages. The company combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques and has built a global reputation among both collectors and professional drivers. Every carriage is handcrafted in their own workshop. All components – from wheels and axles to the finish and upholstery – are manufactured in-house and carefully inspected. This ensures a high degree of precision and durability in every vehicle.
This particular example is a Spider and features a single row of seats and a half-open roof. It is in very good condition with no damage and is finished in beautiful wood lacquer. The many exquisite details are also still in good condition. The seat, with its traditional upholstery, is wonderfully comfortable and free from damage. The carriage is fitted with leaf springs and Bosch brakes at the rear. At the rear of the carriage is a wooden trunk. The wheels and the hood are also still in very good condition. The carriage is suitable for a pair of horses.
A spider is a light, open two-wheeled carriage usually drawn by a single horse. The design originated in England and was mainly used by coachmen who drove their own vehicles.
Features
Very lightweight construction → designed for speed and manoeuvrability
Two large wheels → often tall and thin, which explains the name ‘spider’ (spider-like appearance)
Open seating → usually a single bench or small seating area for 1–2 people
Driven by the occupant themselves (no separate coachman at the rear)
Often featuring a narrow, elegant design
Mendyka builds carriages entirely to order. Customers can specify their requirements, after which the company designs a carriage that suits its intended use, style and historical preference. There is a strong focus on quality and detail, ensuring that every carriage is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.
In addition to new builds, Mendyka specialises in the restoration of antique carriages. Old carriages are restored with great care, retaining original techniques and materials as much as possible. This makes the company vital for the preservation of cultural heritage relating to horse-drawn transport.
Mendyka carriages stand for high-quality craftsmanship, bespoke work and historical authenticity. Each vehicle is unique and is built with attention to detail, safety and tradition, which has earned the company worldwide recognition within the carriage and driving world.
