Ford Escort

Mk1 Rally, Lotus Twin-cam engine

About the Ford Escort

Ford Escort MK 1 1974

- Recently fully restored
- Excellent condition
- Lotus Twin-Cam engine
- Built by Gerard de Rooy

In Britain, the Escort was presented as the successor to the Anglia. It was a very conventional car at the time, with an engine in the front driving the rear wheels. Initially the car was sold only as a two-door sedan, later a sedan and a hatchback were added. In 1969, a four-door version was introduced. There were not many diesel engines in small family cars at that time, and initially the Escort was only available in 1.1 and 1.3 liter versions. The Escort was a good seller, especially in the UK. Later came the 1300 GT, which had a faster version of the 1.3-liter engine and a 2-ventury carburetor that produced 72 horsepower. A special model for racing and rallying, the Escort Twin Cam was powered by a 1.6-liter Lotus engine with twin overhead wheels. The car was very successful in rallies and is considered the most successful rally car of all time.

For the Lotus Elan, Lotus founder Colin Chapman wanted to find a less expensive engine than the expensive all-alloy Coventry Climax FWE used in the original Lotus Elite. He felt that basing his new powerplant on an engine that was built in large volumes would keep costs down. The first Lotus Twin Cam engine was started on a test bench on October 10, 1961.

This beautiful example of a Ford Escort is in top condition. It was recently restored by the well-known Dutch rally driver; Gerard de Rooy. It is painted in a beautiful light blue color with white accent stripes on both the side and hood. At the time of the restoration, an engine change took place. In the Ford, the well-known Lotus Twin Cam engine was installed in it. Hence the "Twin-Cam" badge on the sides above the wheel arches.
Because of its recent restoration, it is 100% rust free and the underside looks sublime. The interior features Sparco bucket seats, along with an LTEC sport steering wheel. In the back, the usual leather bench seat can still be found. Of course, the white headliner is also still of very neat quality. In the interior it has been kept largely original with, among other things, the dashboard and upholstery. At the front there are 4 fog lights which give it a real rally look.

There are several documents present with the Escort. First of all, there are several invoices. In addition, there is a large number of photos from the time of restoration. Here you can see to what extent the details have been worked on and how neatly this is finished.
