HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
Perhaps the most legendary car ever made, with an illustrious history: the DeLorean DMC-12, developed by John DeLorean, is the ultimate style icon of the 1980s, the subject of numerous books, films and documentaries. The brand produced cars from January 1981 until mid-1983. This example, with a chassis number ending in #4187, was built in September 1981, making it an early model. The car was originally delivered new in the United States and was one of the first to be imported into the Netherlands: as early as 1990. The first owner kept the car until 2006 and the second owner until 2025. One sought-after feature the car boasts is air conditioning. Over the years, the car has been very well maintained by a DeLorean specialist, with a further investment of over €10,000 made at the end of 2025. The invoices for this work are included with the car. The car is in good and very original condition. The new MOT (with no advisory points or comments) is valid until June 2028.

EXTERIOR
The exterior is in good and very original condition. The bodywork is made of stainless steel and is therefore rust-free. The plastic front and rear bumpers are in good condition. The rear bumper features stainless steel DeLorean lettering. The original 14-inch and 15-inch alloy wheels are fitted with new Continental tyres from 2024, which are still in mint condition.

INTERIOR
The interior is also in good, original condition with minimal signs of wear. The dashboard is neat and the floor mats are present. The centre console and controls are also in good condition and operate smoothly. The original leather upholstery is in black leather. Whilst most examples feature grey upholstery, black upholstery is particularly sought after. The darker headlining has been replaced. A radio and a ground switch are fitted. The front boot area is also in good condition.

TECHNICAL
The chassis is rigid, original and rust-free (see our extensive photo report, including photos of the underside). The car has been well maintained by a DeLorean specialist and is in good mechanical condition, which translates into excellent handling. A major service was carried out at the end of 2025, with over
€10,000 invested. This included the replacement of the gearbox control unit, fuel hoses, radiator, cooling fins, tyres, front shock absorbers, fuel pump, door seals and window motors. Numerous invoices dating from 2002 onwards are included with the car. Fully roadworthy for the next owner!

GENERAL
DeLorean is world-famous thanks to the 1985 film ‘Back to the Future’, in which the car serves as a time machine. Numerous books and series have also been produced about the brand’s flamboyant owner, John DeLorean, and the origins of the DMC-12. John DeLorean was a successful engineer and businessman who had risen through the ranks to become vice-president of General Motors, then the world’s largest car manufacturer. Partly driven by his dream of developing his own car, he left the company in 1973. His aim was to build a highly distinctive, affordable sports car that was far ahead of its time and would stand the test of time. What followed made headlines around the world. The design was created by the Italian firm Giugiaro, whilst Colin Chaplin (founder of the British car brand Lotus, which was highly successful in motor racing at the time) was responsible for the engineering. The futuristic design is wide and low, and the bodywork is made of stainless steel. Other striking features include the gull-wing doors and the mid-mounted engine. This aluminium 2.8-litre 6-cylinder engine was sourced from Renault/Peugeot/Volvo.

The DMC-12, aimed at the American market, was intended to be produced at a rate of 30,000 units per year, with a new price of 12,000 dollars (hence the ‘12’ in DMC-12). Following a difficult search for a location to produce the car, Northern Ireland was eventually chosen with the help of the British government. It was a region where unemployment was rife at the time and where a conflict between Protestants and Catholics was ongoing. This gave the production of the DMC-12 an additional political dimension. Due to a change in the exchange rate of the British pound, the final retail price was approximately double what had been originally stated. Despite an investment of around half a billion in taxpayers’ money from the British government, the lack of funds remained a problem, which ultimately led to the brand going into administration after producing around 9,000 cars.
